[edit] Appearance
The male salvini cichlid are usually larger and more colorful. The males usually grow to around seven inches with the females rarely exceeding five. The salvini cichlid gets its most vibrant colors during the time of spawning usually turning vibrant reds and yellows, when it is not breeding it is usually a pale yellow with little red. They may gain blue spots as they mature. It is hard to tell the male apart from the female, though the males usually have pointed fins. These cichlids are mild in temperament compared to their cousins.
[edit] Care Requirements
The Salvini cichlid is a very hardy fish your tank water should be between 72–82 degrees fahrenheit. Your pH should be around 7.0. These fish are aggressive they will eat anything that will fit in their mouth so they should not be trusted with little fish. In the presence of very aggressive fish such as a Jack Dempsey cichlid or a managuense cichlid they will hide. They should be in a fairly large tank from about 15 gallons and up.
[edit] Feeding
The salvini can be fed most foods, but the best foods would be wardley's cichlid pellets and live food such as guppies. When feeding your fish guppies, if you don't want your fish to be all carnivores, then only feed them live food about 1 every two weeks. They will also eat frozen brine shrimp and freeze dried krill. Flakes are okay, but not recommended.
