[edit] Geography

The Asansol-Durgapur region is composed of undulating latterite soil. This area lies between two mighty rivers – the Damodar and the Ajay. They flow almost parallel to each other in the region – the average distance between the two rivers is around 30 km. For ages the area was heavily forested and infested with plunderers and marauders. The discovery of coal led to industrialisation of the area and most of the forests have been cleared. [1] At the western fringe of the area the Barakar forms the boundary with Jharkhand.

Nunia, a small stream about 40 km long has its origin near Adra village in the Salanpur area, flows through the Barabani area, past Asansol and joins the Damodar in the Raniganj area. [2]

[edit] Demographics

Salanpur CD Block spread over 135.05 km² has a population of 156, 320 as per 2001 census.[3]

[edit] Economy

Salanpur is a coal mining area. [4] One of the area headquarters of Eastern Coalfields Ltd., a subsidiary of Coal India Limited is located here.[5]

With extensive underground mining for many years, this area has been facing the problem of land subsidence. About 361 villages under the Raniganj and Salanpur coalfield areas are the victims of subsidence.[6]

[edit] Steel Plant

The West Bengal Government signed in May 2007 an agreement with Bhushan Steel to set up a 2 million tonnes integrated steel plant and a 1000 MW captive thermal power plant at Salanpur. 2,500 acres of land will be required for the purpose. The plant is expected to be operational in 2012.[7]

[edit] Transport

Minibuses operating on the Asansol - Chittaranjan route operate via Salanpur. [8]It is about 15 km from Asansol and 10 km from Chittaranjan.

Salanpur rail station is 225 km from Howrah Station.[9]

[edit] Politics

The Left Front wrested the Salanpur panchayat samiti from the Congress in the 2003 panchayat elections.[10]

The area is part of Barabani assembly constituency and Asansol (Lok Sabha constituency)
