[edit] Map
Sakurambo, could you hold up on replacing that map image for a bit? With the colour changes and font changes it looks a bit different and I'd like to look at it first and see if I can make any suggestions for improving it. I also have a general question about svg replacement but I'll come back to that. Mike Christie (talk) 15:15, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

- Thanks. A couple of points I spotted in comparing the two:
- Gwynedd has been omitted
- Essex has been moved slightly
- Dál Riata has been omitted. The accent on the "a" in "Dál" should be included when you add that.
- I'd originally omitted Ireland because I didn't want to include the kingdoms of Ireland, which are rarely relevant to the articles I planned to use this for. Leaving it blank looks a bit odd, so I just brushed it out. However, it's probably better to leave it in, as you have done. If we leave it in, though, perhaps we could crop a bit more from the left? Keep the Hebrides in the picture, but crop right up to them.

- Generally, though, the main problem with svg'ing these maps is that I do occasionally update them as I get advice and input from other Wikipedians. Take a look at this subpage of mine, where I keep an index of some of the maps I've used. As you can see, I'm not really a graphics expert, but I do need these maps for the articles I've worked on. I'd be very interested in collaborating with someone on improving maps, but up till now the issue hasn't really come up. Anyway, the point is that if it would be a pity if someone put a lot of work into an svg version and then I had to switch back to a gif because I was adding another town or location. Not sure what to do about that. This particular map you've converted is likely to be pretty stable, actually, so it was a good choice.

- Last point: I used the font "Chaz" for the kingdom names and I am trying to keep that a standard across multiple maps. Is there any chance you could do the same?

- I really like this new version. There's actually an RFC going on over this particular map right now at Talk:Mercia#RFC: Map for miscellaneous medieval England articles, so I'd suggest we wait till that's settled before replacing it.

- On the fonts, take a look at Image:Northern_central_British_Isles_c_700.gif, which is an attempt of mine to use fonts to distinguish the kingdoms from the places. I used the "Chaz" font for the kingdoms -- it's clearly different from the Times Roman I used elsewhere and is a bit more like the thin fonts atlases use for countries. I'd like to be consistent across maps, though I haven't yet really gone through and made that a standard. What do you think about changing the font to something like that?

- If you would like to do another map, probably the most stable one is Image:English kingdoms 600.gif, which is used in several articles.

- Thanks for doing these, by the way. Can I ask what tool you're using? I use PaintboxPro, which doesn't give an svg option on saving, so I've been using gifs. Mike Christie (talk) 00:53, 16 February 2008 (UTC)

- Hi Mike, sorry about the slow reply. Work got in the way of things a bit.
- As far as SVGs are concerned, it would be better to use one of these fonts, which can be used without having to convert the individual characters into vector paths. This not only reduces the SVG file size, but (at least in theory) it means that the text can be edited with a simple text editor, making translations and corrections a whole lot easier. URW Palladio would be a good choice (you probably have something similar installed on your computer already). For smaller text (small place names, etc.) I would recommend a sans-serif font like Nimbus Sans (or Arial/Helvetica) which is easier to read at small point sizes.
- I'm using Adobe Illustrator, but a lot of people use Inkscape which you should be able to download for free. -- Sakurambo 桜ん坊 00:13, 20 February 2008 (UTC)

- Thanks for the info on fonts. I may change what I'm using, but if you're willing and interested in converting some of these maps, then so long as you are consistent in distinguishing a font for kingdoms from one for places, I think that's enough.

- If you'd like to do another, I was thinking that Image:British 7C kingdoms with Bernicia and Deira.gif and/or Image:British seventh century kingdoms.gif might be good targets. They're very similar to the one you've done; just a couple of name changes and the addition (in one of them) of Bernicia and Deira. It would also be good to move Strathclyde to where it is on the map you've already done. Mike Christie (talk) 09:51, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Tog
So you are saying that an article titled "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" doesn't contain any criticism? Since you are accusing me of not having read the article, then I'll assume you have. Including the numerous parts where he compares OS X features to the corresponding ones in OS 9. Also the two links that point to an article called "Top 9 Reasons Why the Dock Still Sucks". Seems like exactly what we are saying in the article, he is comparing the usability of OS X to the usability of OS 9 and claims that it is a step backwards.
