Saint Mary Church (Haret Elroum)

Saint Mary Church (Haret Elroum) El-Adra-El Mughitha church is a Coptic Orthodox church in Haret Elroum (Romans ally) in Elghoureya Cairo. near the st Theodore Nun's monastery[1].
The church was used as the Seat of the Coptic Orthodox Pope of Alexandria; between 1660 and 1800 AD , when Pope Matthew IV on his first day as a Coptic Pope transferred the seat from Church of the Virigin Mary (Haret Zuweila) to this church.[2] and it stayed there till 1800 when Pope Mark VIII transferred it to Saint Mark's Coptic Orthodox Cathedral (Azbakeya).

When the papal residency moved to that area, it gained importance due to it being the centre of the Coptic Church's activities and communication with authorities. The church is the burial place of a few of the Coptic Popes

Saint Mary Church (Haret Elroum) was rebuilt a few times and in 1794 Ibrahim El-Gohary renovated the church , unfortunately it was burnt during Pope Mark VIII (1797-1809) papacey. and needed renovation again.
