[edit] History

St. Joseph Academy was originally founded in 1865 by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate, in downtown Brownsville. The school closed and re-opened many times under the Oblates. In 1906, the school was transferred to the Marists, and it has remained open ever since. The school had been all-male until 1970, when Saint Joseph admitted its first female students into the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades. In 2004, the construction of the new administration and middle school buildings began. On October 27, 2005 the buildings' dedication took place in the middle school gymnasium.
