Description

Saint Wite’s Cross is a modern proposal for a county flag for the English county of Dorset, named for a local saint whose remains lie in the county. Conceived by Dorset expatriate Stephen Coombs and rendered by David White, the flag continues the recent trend amongst English counties (see w:Devon, w:Scillies, w:Lincolnshire, w:Derbyshire) for cross design flags. Saint Wite’s cross conforms with heraldic principles to avoid any clashing of colours and thus enhances the flag’s visibility. The essentially simple but effective design thus bears a white cross edged ("fimbriated") in red on a golden (i.e. yellow) field. The red and white colours being derived from the county arms.
