En approchant Damas, Saül est tout à coup entouré d'une lumière aveuglante qui lui confère un nimbe lorsque il s'effondre avec son cheval. Il entend une voix : "Saül, Saül, pourquoi me persécutes-tu ?" L'agitation des chevaux à gauche trouve un écho dans la construction chaotique du rocher derrière eux ; ce tumulte contraste avec la sérénité de la plaine profonde menant vers la Bastille depuis le sud-est, en direction de Grigny, où Étienne avait des terres, et de Melun, sa ville natale. Les études de chevaux par Fouquet rivalisent avec celles de Pisanello. En contrebas, des sauvages, un homme et quatre femmes portent les écus et le cartouche.
