Safety shutoff valve
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Safety shut-off valves are safety valves to close a line and stop the flow of material. Some types are manually closed others are automated to act when a pre-set condition (like a possible failure in the system) occurs.
[edit] Principle
When this type of valve is tripped, the fuel flow is quickly stopped, and the indicator disc tells the operator that the electrical circuit has been opened by a failure somewhere in the system. When the trouble has been eliminated so that the circuit is again closed, the valve can be opened by the action of the hand lever. if ,however, the trouble has not been satisfactorily corrected, the circuit will remain open and moving the hand lever will not open the valve, because the valve stem remains disengaged from the handle. Solenoid operated safety shutoff valve .spring action closes this fuel valve instantly when the electric current fails to energize the solenoid. The solenoid circuit may be arranged so that it is broken upon failure of any element of the combustion system. this valve cannot be re-opened unti the solenoid is again energized.
A Safety Shutoff valve should close upon failure of combustion or atomizing air blower, any element of the input control system (such as temperature controllers, steam pressure controllers),air pressure at the burner, fuel pressure at the burner, current from the flame detector, or current from other safety devices such as low water cutoff, and high pressure cutoff. In special cases there may be additional items connected to the shutoff valve. The coil of the valve solenoid must be connected in series with all of there elements and for this fuel, air and steam pressure can be converted to an electrical signal by means of a bellows, bourdon tube, or diaphragm operated mercury switch.
