Ryan Rasmussen (born in 1979 in Ames, Iowa)
As senior analyst at Zocalo Group, I research and design architecture for the practices and critical theory of digital influence. My value to a brand is best qualified by my ability to identify opportunities in emergent social technologies, to engage these opportunities swiftly with unique and creative strategies, and to perceive the long-term impact of engagement upon the digital commons. I understand innovation as the speed of the playing field, where success is a measurement of sustained momentum fueling competitive advantage.
Most recently, I led catalog retailer Levenger into the twenty-first century, becoming their first Emerging Media Specialist in charge of all online engagement. In this capacity, I solely managed the brand's online presence. Embedded within online communities and persistent virtual environments, such as Second Life, I monitored emergent communications and information technologies to forecast strategic opportunities for developing authentic brand conversation. Cross-pollinating seeds of influence using Facebook groups, Flickr networks, YouTube, Blogs, and message boards, I was able to construct a powerful viral network of brand evangelists. My transparent participation and success with community engagement has been written about in numerous online and offline publications, highlighting methods for crowd-sourcing innovation, encouraging collaborative new product development, and seeding brand evangelism.
In addition to maintaining a weblog concerning the evolution of digital communication, I co-authored The Age of Conversation, a book about the ethics and practice of effective social media engagement. In a recent interview spotlighting my work, Andy Sernovitz, former president of the Word Of Mouth Marketing Association, stated, "He encourages real consumers to help design and develop products. Basically, he does all those things that big companies are struggling with. While marketing departments and agencies are debating the optimal word of mouth strategy ... Ryan just does it."
My work in Second Life is done under the name Austin Ellison.
