[edit] Playing Career

[edit] Highlanders

A talented utility back, Ryan played 31 Super Rugby games for the Highlanders between 2002 and 2004 and was their leading try-scorer in 2002.

He was a member of the New Zealand national Sevens training squad and also played in the New Zealand junior volleyball team.

[edit] Suntory Sungoliath

In the 2006-7 season he played for Japanese club Suntory Sungoliath in the Top League. Ryan is a strong runner who gets through tackles, is solid in defence and is a 75 per cent-plus goal kicker who came under closer scrutiny while Eddie Jones was working with Katsuyuki Kiyomiya as Suntory's technical advisor. He was the top points scorer in the Top League in 2006-7.

It was then announced that he would be staying with Suntory for another year. (He was supposed to join Eddie Jones at the Queensland Reds for the 2007 Super 14 campaign, but he turned down the chance so he could be available to play for Japan from 2008.)

[edit] Japan squad

Ryan qualified for Japan and was selected in February 2008 as a member of the Japan national squad of 52 players.
