[edit] Game features

Daimonin features an isometric graphic system, and some of the same features as Crossfire and gameplay similar to that of Diablo[1]. Its server and client are licensed under the GNU General Public License, and some of the artwork, music, sounds, and maps falls under a separate artistic license. The game is currently beta, there are two beta servers, one for testing (which is undergoing maintenance), and one stable (that has many players) running. Daimonin also has a 3-d client being developed (with the Ogre 3D engine) and tested, although is not suitable for game play yet.

The client and server (Beta 4) will run in Linux and Microsoft Windows.

Daimonin features many of the same abilities as Crossfire, but it also has many improvements. Daimonin adds a combat targeting system that focuses the attack on an opponent and will automatically attack each turn. It also removes the need to use say in a command to say something. Instead, the player merely types what he or she wants to say. In order to use a command, he or she must prefix it with a /, similar to IRC.

[edit] Community

Daimonin has a large, stable development community according to Ohloh[2]. Daimonin averages between 20 and 55 players on the main server at any given time[3]. Daimonin also has a list of comprehensive rules, and guidelines posted for player input and suggestions[4].

[edit] Open source code vs. closed game environment

Parts of the Daimonin world content are not available for download; this has led to discussion of whether or not Daimonin is truly open source. The source for the game is completely open; however, this is to be distinguished from the current running instance of the game, which does have closed portions. As of beta 4, daimonin has upgraded, with many new spells and a world which is over 20x that of the previous world.

[edit] Precompiled binaries

In order not to lose time supporting third party servers, Daimonin precompiled builds have also had the ability to connect to third-party servers disabled, inviting them to compile, distribute and support their own binaries.
