[edit] Gin?

The standard game I've always known as "rummy" is quite distinct from gin rummy. Perhaps there should be some clarification on this point. -Branddobbe 18:13, 5 March 2006 (UTC)

AFAIK "Rummy" refers to the game that is named Basic Rummy in the article, and Straight Rummy at pagat.com. I've never heard it to be used to refer specifically to Gin Rummy. If one wants to have a shorter expression for Gin Rummy, I think one uses the word "Gin" rather than "Rummy". To complicate matters, there are a plethora of games called <something> Rummy, which are classified as Rummy games. However, not all Rummy games are called <something> Rummy, Canasta and Pan being notable examples.Punainen Nörtti 09:00, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Matching games REDIRECT

Matching games redirects to rummy? It shouldn't. There are so many matching card games and rummy is just one of them. – Morganfitzp 20:53, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

[edit] incomprehensible explanation

If someone understands what this is trying to say, please improve the wording:

Also if a player has 3 of a kind, one of which continues another sequence on the field then another player may also continue off of that card. For example: if a player had a 3, 4, and 5 of hearts and another player had a three of a kind with 6, then another player may continue the sequence off of the player with 6. --Espoo 14:34, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Rummy Championships

I have taken the liberty of moving the text regarding the Rummy championships from the article to the talk page. It is entirely inappropriate to declare one part of the article "clearly wrong for many reasons", regardless of the statements' validity. I have zero knowledge as to the truth of this matter, so we should wait until someone can clearly reference the information before putting it back in the article. I would suggest that, should references be found, we should create a new section heading for it, not simply place the information in the header.

Until 2008, there were many disputed Rummy championships but never an undisputed champion. The first ever undisputed champion was crowned Queen at the Fox Venur (Venur - Rummy venue) in January 2008 [citation needed]. The Fox in Twickenham arguably also held the first ever left handed Rummy event in 1734. The Queen of Rummy was taken by one Ali "2-8 suited" Watts who melded a set of 2's and Quad 8's to take down the title and first prize of nearly £20 [citation needed]. Recent negotiations with Harrah's may see this event at the WSOP as a bracelet event [citation needed].

Further to the posting above, which is clearly wrong for many reasons, the Rummy Association have recently written to me to ask me to update this site with the truth. The first world championships were held in Bucharest in 1308, but in those days it was a team event. Four teams entered this event, Hungary, Bulgaria and Austria being the losers, Translyvania winning the gold medal and bragging rights. Since the boundaries were in dispute the winning team used this opportunity to create a new country to celebrate their win and naturally since Rummy was the national sport, they renamed themselves Rumania, Latin for "Rummy Champions".

Rumania went on to win the championships for 98 consecutive years, finally beaten by a mixed team from west London, Twick which is on the north side of the Thames and Ham who occupy the south side. They used their gold success to build various pubs in the area, all dedicated to Rummy. Ironically the name "The Fox" derives from the Latin word foxcus which is the word used to describe the first discarded card in rummy.

The Fox will be celebrating the 700th anniversary of this original championships next month. Unfortunately this is a closed event but TV rights have yet to be sealed so please contact Yokohama Pete at the Fox for further details. The event is billed as 'War Rummy of the Worlds' and includes contestants from New Zealand, the Netherlands and Scotland. Mexico and Wales failed to qualifying. The prize fund is expected to be upto one million pounds, possibly more.
