RuggedCom (TSX: RCM) is a Canadian company founded in 2001 by Marzio Pozzuoli, formerly an engineering manager at GE Multilin.
Today, RuggedCom is considered a leading [1] supplier of rugged communications networking solutions designed for mission-critical applications in harsh environments. The company manufactures Ethernet switches, network routers, wireless devices, serial servers, media converters, software.
Networking equipment used in harsh environments must meet a number of IEEE and IEC standards, including: Electrical power substations (IEEE 1613 and IEC61850-3), industrial applications (e.g. oil refineries) (IEC 61000-6-2), military applications, infrastructure applicationss (e.g. roadside traffic control cabinets) (NEMA TS 2), metals and minerals processing (IEC 61800-3)
There is a growing worldwide demand for Internet Protocol communications networks suitable for harsh environments and the global initiative to integrate communications networks with electric power grids, known as the Smart Power Grid.
Ruggedized networking components facilitate the extension of Internet Protocol (“IP”) based communications networks from benign office environments to harsh non-office environments. IP-based communications networks are faster, more flexible and offer greater functionality than the low speed serial communications still used in most harsh environments.
The extension of IP-based communications networks enables the seamless flow of information between an enterprise’s non-office environment and its office environment. Moreover, the implementation of a common networking technology and infrastructure across an entire enterprise improves overall efficiency, increases the ability to monitor and secure operational assets and reduces costs associated with installation, integration, maintenance, parts and training.
