Rue Protzer

Rue Protzer (born 1966 in Stuttgart) is a German jazz guitarist and composer. He is the leader of the Rue de Paris group. This project has involved important artists such as Randy Brecker, Ack van Rooyen, Lee Konitz or Adam Nussbaum

[edit] Biography

Protzer grew up in Nuremberg, Germany, and won his first award as a composer at the age of 15. After graduating from high school, he attended Nuremberg Conservatory (now Hochschule für Musik Nürnberg-Augsburg) studying classical guitar and composition. Protzer worked for several years as a studio and session musician before focussing his education on jazz. His jazz guitar teachers include Pat Metheny, Joe Beck, Gene Bertoncini and Peter O`Mara.

In 2005 Protzer made his debut as a leader when he released “Quiet Motion” on Sony Classical. The album featured Ack van Rooyen, Adam Nussbaum, Thomas Rückert and John Goldsby and received some very positive reviews.

A second album, again under the “Rue de Paris” project-name (featuring i.a. Randy Brecker and Lee Konitz), was released (again with Sony) in 2007 under the title of “New York Slow”.

Protzer uses the name “Rue de Paris” as a label for his approach to developing jazz as improvised chamber music. His original compositions and interpretations of standard tunes are usually geared towards creating contemplative musical experiences. Protzer has frequently stated that he sees his music as a poetic attempt to counterbalance today’s multi-media overflow.

Protzer uses a 1998 Gibson L5 as his main instrument, which he amplifies with a Fender Twin Reverb. He also uses a Taylor steel-string and a Yamaha nylon-string acoustic guitar together with AER amps. He does not use any effects.
