[edit] Robert (Bob) Seyller
Born to Dennis and Sharon Seyller, Robert Seyller grew up in the four corners region of New Mexico. As a native of the Land of Enchantment Seyller attended McCormick Elementary School, Hermosa Jr. High, and Farmington High School.
[edit] Childhood:
Many of Seyller first memories are of times spent in his fathers Farmington N.M. based manufacturing facility. In fact Seyller's first job came at the age of ten when he worked as an in facility parts runner, and stocker for the company, Seyller and Sons. this line of employment would continue for the next 8 years as Seyller moved from department to department learning how to build the service units his father designed. Seyller spent many of his summers learning to fabricate and install each component.
Seyller often credits the time spent in the manufacturing facility as a cause for his current work ethic.
During his secondary education Seyller joined the football team as a offensive and defensive tackle. During his Sophomore year Seyller would also join the staff of Farmington High School student paper "The Scorpion". by his senior year Seyller had become co-editor of the publication. It was at this time Seyller also began to explore Video Journalism as an alternative to the publication method he had become familiar with.
During Seyllers Junior year he was selected to participate in the American Legion Boys State Program. After attending the program he was selected to represent New Mexico during the Boys Nation Program in Washington D.C. Here seyller met President George W. Bush, who affectionately nicknamed him Bobby Boy.
Bush's first words were "Bobby Boy, how they been treating you here in D.C."
Seyller recalled the experience later " I was at the White House and President Bush delivered a speech that centered on how honored he was that people would pray for him. I was the very first in the group of over 200 to shake his hand, Bush's first words were "Bobby Boy, how they been treating you here in D.C.""
During his time at the nations capital Seyller was also present for the official presentation of the medal of honor to the Navajo Code Talkers.
[edit] Education:
Seyller began his studies at Eastern new Mexico University (ENMU) in Portales NM. During his freshman year Seyller began working at local PBS Affiliate KENW as a camera man and sound board operator. Impressing program directors during his on-air interview Seyller was asked to head the Thursday sports line up on Scene Three News. On several occasions Seyller was asked to anchor the news broadcast when traditional staff were unavailable.
Though Seyller always enjoyed the Reporters desk he often felt his biased feelings in politics and other areas would never allow him to be an objective journalist.
After his freshman year Seyller realigned his major to public relations, a field where he could develop interests in both communication and politics.
During his time at ENMU Seyller headed several successful on campus campaigns electing his candidates into public offices. His most notable in college campaign was for Student body president Bob Cornelius.
During the 2003-2004 semester Seyller became completely invested in on campus politics. Serving as student senator for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Seyller would go on to represent the student body as the Faculty Senate Liaison. Additional committees included a spot on student fees, and the curriculum and instruction committee.
After a controversial second election ended in Failure for Bob Cornelius, Seyller began to focus on the Conservative Student Group College Republicans. Seyller deployed his public relations knowledge helping the group grow to over 10% of the student population.
Seyller spent the 2004-2005 school year concentrating on his studies and helping develop the College Republicans of which he was now president. It was during this year he would also relocate from on campus housing to move in with his roommates Joanna Beard, Tony Cabral, and Kori Totten,
In May of 2005 Seyller formally announced that he would be seeking the office of student body president. Preparing for an intense election campaign Seyller was surprised to learn that his Roommate would also be seeking the office.
The resulting election ended with the largest turn out for a student election in School History. With over a third of ENMU's 3000 plus population voting Seyller lost by less than 100 votes.
When later asked about his Failed campaign Seyller said "I let my personal Friendship with Totten kept me from running the type of campaign that would have won."
During the summer of 2005 Seyller began employment with the Federal TRIO Program "Upward Bound." Serving as a Summer resident assistant Seyller would come to see the position as an opportunity to reestablish his shaken confidence.
Seyller spent the 2005-2006 school year in relative obscurity, after resigning as president of the College Republicans Seyller began working as a cashier for the entertainment outlet Hastings. Seyller was quickly promoted to Video Assistant where he helped with customer service.
In March of 2006 Seyller left Hastings when a part time postion became available at Upward Bound. Hired as a student hire Seyller spent many days filing student paper work.
That summer Seyller returned to Upward Bound as a resident assistant. Secure that he had re-established a loyal friendship base in several of his co-workers Seyller spent his final semester at ENMU developing projects for the Department of Communicative Arts and Sciences.
During his final semester in fall of 2006 Seyller founded the "Future Communication professionals of ENMU" a student organization that sought to develop paid contract with the local community where students could develop their portfolio and earn spending cash. by the end of the society it had become a study group for dedicated students in a law class.
At this time Seyller also took on the duties for the ENMU Peanut Project. As the Sales Manager for the Peanut Project Seyller sold in excess of 4,000 bags for the student run scholarship project.
Dr. Janet Roehl, professor of communication at ENMU would latter tell Seyller that he "Really helmed the project and it succeeded in large part due to his efforts."
Upon graduating Seyller was greeted by his professors and faculty to wish him the best of luck. Seyller left ENMU with a Bachelor of Science in Communicative Arts in Sciences, Emphasis: Public Relations.
