[edit] Why spelling?

This is not grammar, per se. However, this is extremely important for the writing of an encyclopedia.

[edit] Rules

These are general rules and advice to help you out. Remember that rules almost always have exceptions; if you are unsure about a spelling, look it up.

  • "i" before "e" except after "c", or when sounded like "a" in "neighbor" and "whey".
  • A "q" is almost always followed by a "u".
  • Typos happen. Proofread if you make them a lot.
  • If you don't know how to spell something, look it up! Go to Wiktionary or something. Don't torture some editor with the task of having to fix your mistakes.
  • If you have been repeatedly criticized in regards to your spelling, then paste your article into a word processor to spell-check it.
  • Some web browsers like Firefox and Safari have a built in spelling checker.
  • "Terminus" is spelled like that- not any way else!
  • Contractions like "can't" and "don't" have apostrophes where the letters are omitted!
