[edit] Hacker emblem / userbox

On contributing a userbox for hackers, I've dropped a note onto the talk pages of a few users whom I noticed link to Image:Hacker_Emblem.png in the hope that it might be of interest. I hope this isn't a breach of etiquette and would welcome responses from them here. jmb

The userbox says "This user is a hacker.", but the Hacker Emblem does not nescesarily mean that the user displaying it claims to be a hacker, but rather that he/she express sympathy with hackers' goals, hackers' values, and the hacker way of living. Hacker as a title is earned when other people state that you're a hacker, not so cool if you claim it when nobody else have said it to you. So the text "This user is a hacker." might not been the best choice of text. -- Frap 13:51, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
Very true. I experimented with various wordings for a while before committing it, not liking any, and decided to leave it in the simplest possible form in the first instance. The best alternative I found then was "is considered a hacker". Perhaps "does not claim to be a hacker"? :) jmb 14:45, 12 February 2006 (UTC)
It could simply say "Hacker Emblem" only. Or "Sympathizes with the hacker goals and values.", dont know. -- Frap 00:12, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

I've changed hacker link to hacker culture in this userbox, hope It's OK. A.J. 10:38, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
