On April 2, 2007, Dr. Allan R. Cahoon became the new president of Royal Roads University.
Dr. Cahoon has been a professor of business administration at the University of Regina since 2002. He was a professor of management at the University of Calgary from 1976 to 2001 where he also held at various times positions of assistant dean (Graduate Programs), chairperson, director of research and director for the Americas in the Faculty of Management. He was president of the University of Calgary's Faculty Association and director of that university’s OLADE Project on Energy and the Environment. A native of Alberta, he obtained his bachelor of arts and master of science degrees from Brigham Young University between 1970 and 1971 and his PhD from Syracuse University in 1974.
Having recently had his vice presidential appointment at the University of Regina renewed, Dr. Cahoon was admitted by his colleagues for innovation, support and advocacy on behalf of the institution, forging excellent relationships with government and working collaboratively with the corporate sector in Saskatchewan and for his great rapport with students. Dr. Cahoon has been an admirer of the unique Royal Roads mission since the its inception and the board of governors was impressed with his enthusiasm for RRU's applied emphasis in programming and research.
Dr. Cahoon also joined the RRU Faculty of Management as a professor.
[edit] Campus and grounds
The campus and surrounding grounds of Royal Roads University are situated at Hatley Park National Historic Site. Royal Roads leases the land from the Department of National Defence for $1 per year and assumes all stewardship responsibilities related to the site including the cost of site management, operations, the protection, preservation and restoration of heritage assets, which include all buildings on the site as well as many heritage gardens and educating the public about the site's historic and natural attributes.
[edit] History
Originally used by the Coast Salish, the land was developed for agriculture by European immigrants and their descendants. In 1906, the coal magnate and politician James Dunsmuir purchased the land to build an estate. The Canadian government acquired the buildings and grounds from his descendants in 1940 to serve as a naval training establishment, which came to be known as Royal Roads Military College. In 1995, the military college was closed and the land and facilities leased by the government of British Columbia. The site was converted into Royal Roads University the same year.
The military college and the university took their name from Royal Roads, the body of water that forms the entrance into Esquimalt Harbour from the Strait of Juan de Fuca, lying to the east of the facility.
[edit] Buildings and Facilities
The grounds, a mix of landscaped gardens and natural woodland, still go by the name of Hatley Park which the Dunsmuirs gave their estate (it is not a designated park). Hatley Castle and its surroundings have made appearances in numerous movies and TV series programs such as Smallville where it serves as the Luthor Mansion, and the second and third X-Men films where the university is transformed into Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters.
Visitors to the 565 acre Hatley Park can tour the extensive walking trails, as well as the Hatley Castle museum. The museum is free to enter, and contains historic, local memorabilia as well as a gift shop. Tours of the castle itself are available (schedule is seasonal) and access to the heritage gardens (approx 20 acres) have a visitor fee that helps offset the cost of preserving the site.
