[edit] History

ROHS is a 2006 consolidation of former intra-city rivals Royal Oak George A. Dondero High School and Royal Oak Clarence M. Kimball High School.

This educational facility draws its name from the original Royal Oak High School opened in 1913, and its predecessor, the "new" Royal Oak High School, opened in 1927. After the opening of a second high school facility within the Royal Oak school system in 1957, the then "Royal Oak High School" was forced to change its name to "George A. Dondero High School". Its counterpart was named "Clarence M. Kimball High School".

At their peak, both institutions had enrollment of over 2,000 students. But declining enrollment forced the closure of Dondero High School in 2006, and the student populations of the two schools were merged into one facility. Kimball High School became the site of the new merged school. Extensive renovations were made to accommodate the surge of students, after which the high school was renamed Royal Oak High School. The name change was made not only to signal a new beginning for the city, but also to quell growing concerns that old school rivalries would prompt hallway tensions and division among students.

    • The Herald, which originated from Kimball High School, features school-centered news and updates.
    • The Acorn is a news magazine - originally from Dondero High publication - that reports on more widespread affairs to increase student global awareness. The Acorn is a proud recipient of Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) awards.
  • Noesis is the student creative arts magazine, providing a forum for student artists to publish their work.
  • The Royal Oak High School yearbook is called "The Legacy". Past editions include 2007's "Flying First Class" and 2008's "Greatness '08's Us".

[edit] Royal Oak High School Band Program

The Royal Oak High School Band Program features a marching band, concert band, symphony band, jazz band, and wind ensemble. Many of these groups participate in state band competitions for the MCBA and the MSBOA. The bands are directed by Mr. Tim Foreman and Mr. David Jensen.

  • The award-winning wind ensemble is an elite group of musicians that are selected by audition. The curriculum of the wind ensemble class consists of a vigorous spectrum of music on par with the programs of professional ensembles.

[edit] Fight Song

Royal Oak High School's fight song's lyrics are:

"Stand and cheer for the Royal Oak Ravens

United, strong and true

Knowing our victory is close at hand,

We hail the silver, black and blue!

The Raven Spirit can’t be broken

We are superior through and through.

Fight, Fight, Fight! Raven Team take flight

We’ll march to victory with you!"

Lyrics and music composed by Mr. David Jensen.
