This is a short argument on why homework should be banned. Some of it is personal opinion but all the numbers are accurate.

I hope students who are trying to put together an argument will find this useful!

DebateHomework should be banned Affirmative

1st Speaker • Deprives you of quality time that could be spent with family and friends. Homework causes trouble in the family. Parents try to help and then get angry when the child doesn’t understand. • Homework builds stress; we already have tests, out of school activities etc…

2nd Speaker • The required homework time for year 8 is an 1 ½ hours but each student is expected to do ½ an hour per subject and this could potentially cause the time spent on homework to build up to 2 ½ hours. • According to the Australian Beuro of Statistics 85% of all students have a computer at home but this means that 15% of all students don’t have access to a computer. A student that does not have access to a computer at home is disadvantaged when doing homework because most new information is found on the internet rather than in books.

These are possible arguments that could be made by the Negative side (Homework shoould not be banned) each point has a rebbutle to answer it. • Homework builds on the skills learnt at school. The students should have learnt the skills at school when the teacher was there to help them rather than at home using up their parents time asking questions. It is easy to get mixed up at home and make a small mistake. If this mistake is made it is likely that you will continue this mistake through out the work at home. This is a problem because this mistake could become a habit without a teacher there to correct you.

• Homework is a useful skill for later on in life where you may have to hand in work assignments. It is not necessary to learn the skills needed for assignments out of school because you can learn to use time wisely and work on assignments in class with a teacher present to give advice.

• Homework uses up time that is otherwise wasted on TV. Relaxing after a day of working hard is important and much better than working for another 2 ½ hours. Overworking is a serious problem in society. According to researchers at the Adelaide and Sydney Universities in some cases overwork leads to suicide attempts and family breakdowns. It is not good to start this pattern of overwork in school through homework.

Homework should be banned because of the following reasons that have been stated by the affirmative side. Firstly, Homework deprives children of quality time that should be spent with family and friends. Secondly, homework causes unnecessary stress over the top of tests and out of school activities. Thirdly, the time spent on homework is wasted and to long for children and adolescents that have just finished a 6 hour day at school. And lastly, it is unfair for those children that don’t have access to resources such as computers or parents who are able to help them. Homework should be banned.
