Where did Roscoe Conkling Barnes come from? My research says his name was Charles Roscoe BARNES? Was Conkling a nick name? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kurtmccrary (talkcontribs) 16:58, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

There has been some controversy over the last few years as to what his name was. His name was always thought to have been Roscoe Conkling Barnes until very recently, when some published SABR research indicated that it was Charles Roscoe Barnes. For the record Roscoe Conkling was a famous politician in Barnes' youth, but it's unlikely that he would have been named for the man in when he was born in 1850, as Conkling wasn't very well-known at all at that time. It seems more likely that the "Charles Roscoe" was Barnes' real name, that he used his middle name, that someone thought it amusing to add the extra middle name when he was older to connect him with the more famous man, and that history has forgotten the origin. Just a theory; it might be wrong. -- Couillaud (talk) 18:17, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

Ross Barnes given name was Charles Roscoe Barnes. I have searched census records to corroborate this. I am from Mt Morris NY, Barnes hometown. More importantly, the image on this page is not Ross Barnes. I have seen almost every known image of him and this image is wrong. The shape of the head is wrong. Barnes has light eyes in all other photos. This picture shows a man with dark eyes. Barnes always parted his hair on the right, this man parts his hair on the left. It just looks nothing like any Barnes image I have or have seen. I would insert one of mine, but I can't figure out how to do it. I'm not real computer savvy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.69.126.153 (talk) 21:41, 24 February 2008 (UTC)
