Roman Catholic Apostolic Prefecture of the Marshall Islands
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Roman Catholic Apostolic Prefecture of the Marshall Islands (MI) is an ecclesiastical territory below the rank of diocese in the Marshall Islands. Although the prefecture is a suffragan of the Metropolitan Province of Agaña, the prelature includes Wake Island which is under the territorial jurisdiction of the United States. The MI prefecture is led by a prefect who is pastor of the Cathedral of the Assumption in Majuro. The prefect was appointed from the local missionary Jesuits.
This prefecture was established on April 23, 1993 by Pope John Paul II when it was split from the former Diocese of Carolines-Marshalls.
While small in total number of Catholics, the area covered is nearly the size of the United States.
Father James C. Gould has been the only prelate.
