ROM-DOS is an embedded operating system that enables DOS applications to run on embedded hardware. It was created in 1989, and is maintained by Datalight, Inc.[1]

ROM-DOS application programmers typically develop and begin testing applications on standard desktop computers running DOS. When the application program is finished or at a stage where it can no longer be developed outside the target hardware, it is copied to the target embedded system that is running ROM-DOS. Because ROM-DOS is designed to boot from solid-state ROM, it enables an embedded system to start up quickly, as compared to systems that boot from floppy disk or a hard drive.
