The Swartz firing pin safety is a passive safety mechanism originally integrated into 1911-style pistols and is intended to reduce accidental discharges.
- was used in various Colt manufactured pistols from 1938-1941 [1]
- is currently used by Kimber in their Series II pistols [2]

[edit] Design
- 3 additional parts: L-shaped firing pin lock (part 12), spring held in place by the rear sight (part 15), firing pin safety actuator (part 21). and modification to the firing pin.
- safety disengaged when gripping the pistol
- if the spring breaks the other parts of the mechanism will not be able to drop into the action to cause a malfunction
[edit] Comparison
Other drop safety mechanisms involving firing pin or hammer...
- compare to Colt's current Series 80 design
- there has been some discussion vs Series 80, trigger pull disengagement may detrimentally affect accuracy (citation?)
- transfer bar
- Hammer block

[edit] TODO
- convert all outlines to actual copy
- When wiki upload restriction is lifted upload and thumbnail the first two pages of the patent add to the top and right justify. Also reference the three new parts from "Design" section
- Link from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safety_%28firearms%29#Firing_Pin_Block, edit to include possibility of disengaging safety without the use of the trigger
- add to WikiProject Firearms list for review
