Rishi Kumaar (Tamil: ரிஷி குமார்; born April 30, 1975 in Singapore) is a popular and engaging artiste in the Indian entertainment scene in Singapore.
A talented individual who has been making waves in the local Indian music scene in Singapore with his spark, talent and originality. The 2nd runner-up for Vasantham Star (2005), the local Tamil version of Pop Idol an annual event by MediaCorp TV12 Vasantham Central, Mr. S P Rishi Kumaar is a graduate from the Asian Academy Of Film & Television in Delhi. He is a firm believer that hard work, perseverance and sustenance are the road to success and upholds his beliefs throughout his 10 years of relentless contribution towards the local entertainment industry.
A talented youth with very humble origins, Rishi’s musical journey started at an early age of five when he used to accompany his musician father for live stage performances. He later learnt to play Sitar, a Hindustani classical stringed instrument under the pupilage of Maestro Ustad Sharafat Khan at the Singapore Indian Fine Arts Society. Rishi later experimented by singing in numerous live bands, pubs, stage shows and television programs. His music influences were greatly shaped by his experiences and exposure to classical Indian and Western music.
A well known artiste at MediaCorp TV12 Vasantham Central, he has been performing as a singer and actor for the past ten years in variety and drama programs in MediaCorp TV12 Vasantham Central and MediaCorp TV Channel 5. He was the only artiste from Vasantham Star (2005) to be featured as a singer and a music composer in Planet Galatta 2006 an international album supported by MediaCorp TV12. His very own composition from the same album "Vayakaatu" was warmly received but it was Rishi's rendition of "Aiyo, ithu nalla sarakku" that went on to become a commercial success scoring mass appeal among fans in Singapore and Malaysia.
Fresh from the Vasantham Star 2005, the producers from Eagle Vision sat up and noticed him. They saw the fire, versatility and potential of Rishi. Having seen his previous work where he was cast in a more serious role in English dramas in MediaCorp TV Channel 5, they immediately cast him as the lead in the comedy Miss Jaanu which was aired during prime time in Vasantham Central early Feb 2006. This comedy saw the smooth suave entertainer hanging up his cool sophisticated persona and transforming into a geeky nerd to win the heart of his screen lady love. This comedy won raving reviews from the press and the public propelling his popularity to an iconic status.
Adding another feather to his cap, his early music composition I'm in love which he wrote and vocally rendered was nominated for the Best Original Song Composition Category in “Pradana Vizhla” (2004), an annual event by MediaCorp in recognition and honour of exceptional artistes in the media.
Passionate, creative, professional and bold-these are the qualities that best deem to describe Rishi Kumaar. He is passionate about his craft, creative in his concepts and presentation, professional in the way he conducts himself and last but not the least am bold enough to challenge himself to maximize his potential as a true artist.
The unprecedented scope of Rishi’s talent encompasses all the major disciplines – acting, directing, singing, lyrics composing, producing and scriptwriting. To excel in just one area is rare; to excel at the lot is nothing less than extraordinary. A multi-talented artiste with an eye for flamboyant dramatic visualizing and a panache and flair for execution with style, class and sophistication.
