Rick Sheppard's Drifters have been touring since the 70s. At one point, Abdul (Billy Davis) Samad, the original guitar player from the Drifters was touring with Sheppard's group. The group lost touch with Samad and no one has been able to contact him since sometime in the 1990s. His last known place of residence is East Orange, New Jersey.
Like many other groups of Drifters during the 70s, Sheppard's group was also prevented from working because of Larry Marshak, the NY promoter who booked phoney oldies groups (Drifters, Coasters, Platters) all over the US, then sued the real members of the groups to stop them from working. At the same time, if the real members of oldies groups wanted to continue to work and make a living, they had to pay attorneys to defend themselves and also try to prove that Marshak was the biggest phoney in the US.
Look up articles on Larry Marshak and you will find a man who has deceived the public for many years, and has made millions from the deception. As of November 2007 a judgment has been won in NYC by Faye Treadwell and Rick Sheppard. They are both pursuing this in hopes of recouping lost revenues from many years of Marshak's deceptive practices.
Rick Sheppard has recorded on EMI/Capitol Music, and continues to tour in the US and Canada. He has owned the Drifters Trademark in Canada since the 70s. http://www.thedriftersonline.com
