- Although she's getting on a bit now, my Rhode Island Red used to lay one egg a day. Egg production tends to reduce as the hen gets older. It also depends on the breed; Rhode Island Reds, followed closely by Sussex are the best layers, others, such as meat birds like Orpingtons are not so good. Sign your posts!
