| Origin | nuchal ligaments, spinous processes of the C7 to T5 vertebrae |
| Insertion | medial border of the scapula |

| Nerve: | dorsal scapular nerve (C4 and C5) |
| Action: | Retracts the scapula and rotates it to depress the glenoid cavity. It also fixes the scapula to the thoracic wall. |

The rhomboid muscles, often simply called the rhomboids, are rhombus-shaped muscles associated with the scapula and are chiefly responsible for its retraction. There are two rhomboid muscles:
