Template talk:Resolved/Redraft1
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] Purpose
Typical uses include:
- A question or problem has been raised and then been adequately addressed
- A proposal elicits no response after a long period of time; a closing note should explain this
- A proposed change to an article is rejected by consensus
- A topic is self-resolving (e.g. a comment that requires no followup, the awarding of a barnstar, etc.)
- A topic has become moot (e.g. because the article text it refers to has been changed to such an extent that the issue raised no longer applies); a closing note should explain this
- A topic is misplaced (e.g. merge discussion happening on the talk page of merge-from article rather than the merge-to article); a closing note that directs readers to the proper locale of the discussion.
- A topic consists of nothing but personal chat between two or more editors that should be moved to user talk; a closing note should suggest this
- A formal proposal or poll has come to conclusion
- An argument has come to a clear consensus but a tendentious editor who disagrees continues to argue in another direction long after the fact (and may still do so; the tag will simply alert other editors that the issue is not considered active by others)
- An old issue long settled by consensus is re-raised by someone new to the topic; a closing note should include a pointer to the older discussion(s).
- An argument is clearly a case of trolling and further replies to the incendiary material will be counterproductive; a closing note should explain this
- A discussion has moved (e.g. into separate, newer threads), and the original topic is moribund or could confuse incoming participants as to where the topic is presently active; a closing note should include a pointer to the newer discussion(s).
- One is rescinding one's own proposal, question or idea, and others have not taken up the position being rescinded; a closing note should explain this
The template should not be misused. Some examples of abuse include using the template for:
- Attempting to close a legitimate discussion that is still active
- Dismissing the arguments of others simply because one disagrees with them
- Making a wikipolitical point such as indicating dissatisfaction with the importance of a topic
- Closing a question, request or dispute that has only been partially resolved
The "Resolved" tag is not final and does not permanently close a conversation. If new issues arise, or the item is not fully resolved, any editor may remove the tag, and such removal should not be reverted without good cause.
