Because of users automatically creating accounts for vandalism, Wikipedia has been forced to prevent usernames being created that are too similar to existing usernames and to add an image (called a captcha) to the login process to confirm that users are not using an automated process. If you have attempted to create an account, but have chosen a username that is too similar to an existing username, or have been unable to read the image because you are using a screen reader, or a browser that does not support images, please post your request for an account here. Follow the instructions below:

Instructions:

  1. Check here to make sure your desired name isn't already in use.
  2. Click this link.
  3. Follow the instructions provided, and type the username that you wish to register, and an e-mail address to send your password to. You may wish to use a disposable e-mail address, as it will be made public for up to a few weeks after your request is made. Do not enter the password that you'd like to use on the account - you will receive a randomized password via e-mail, which you can later change after login, in the user preferences.
  4. Check back at both this page and your e-mail inbox for any possible updates or problems that may occur with your request.
    • If you are told that the username is "already taken", you will need to re-apply for a different username. (Before re-applying check that you didn't get the e-mail - sometimes one user will create it without removing it, and another user will try to create it and leave such a message when the attempt fails).
    • If you are told that the username is "similar to another account", then it means that some of the experienced users who help out here can't create the account, but a few others (administrators) can and probably will. You will need to wait a little bit longer for your account to be made.
    • Once your account has been made successfully, you will receive an automated e-mail from wiki@wikimedia.org stating your login credentials. You can use these to log in where you will then be prompted to create a new password.

Administrators and experienced users: Instructions on how to act on requests (including creating an account) can be found here.

Archives are available listing fulfilled requests. Only the username is listed for privacy reasons; if you need any other information, please ask at the talk page.
