Recently [Sept 2005]I went searching for these Eagles. The building was demolished but the Eagles were salvaged and in the mid-1970s were purchased by Best products and moved to their HQ, just outside Richmond VA. I went to Richmond and after some poking around learned that Best Products had gone under and that the building was now owned by a major bank. So I went there and found a pretty high secutiry thing happening [see Post 911 World ]. I discovered the Eagle by the front entrance, which was locked. I buzzed the security person inside and asked to photograph the scullptures - and was told, "No". I said that I had traveled 2,000 miles to photograph them and asked if I could speak to a superior and was again told, "No." I asked if there was anyone that that I could talk to and was yet again told, "No."
As I walked away I heard a parting, "And have a nice day sir."
So . . . . . . ............ I went and found a phone, called the bank and could get no answer, [it was by then Friday afternoon] from customer service. ["Who's On First is out of the office, please call What's On Second if you need help", and What's On Second didn't seem to be there either]. So . . . . . ....... I called my wife, 2,000 miles away, who looked up the major bank on the internet and got some more phone numbers. None of them got me a human. So . . . . ......... I drove 2,000 home [hitting Hurricane Rita en route] and began sending emails. That lasted several weeks until I finally got hold of the person in charge of this bank's art. And learned that their bank didn't actually own the building [or the sculptures] but just leased it from - another big bank. So . . . . . ........ if I lived within a day's drive I probably would have continued but I don't and so I didn't. - Well done for trying. At least you got a story out of it... -- Solipsist 08:27, 16 December 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks Slip - I am just wondering if I should revoke my, "Ask-First" rule in picture taking and just come in shooting. I have a Rules-to-Live-Life-By #17 that says, "If you can't take 'No' for an answer then don't ask the question." I transgressed the rule that time and am still complaining months later. - Bob sent me a photo of a pair of limestone Eagles with a large lamp that were in front of a bank these came originally from the Airlines Building on 42nd and Park Ave NYC which was demolished around 1979. I added a photo link of the building to the article page. lostNYC
