Talk:René Belbenoit
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
According to http://www.terra.com.br/istoe/1870/internacional/1870_verdadeira_historia_do_papillon.htm, the real Rene died in Brazil, and the one that died in USA was another prisioner that assumed his name in USA to protect the prisioners that stayed in Brazil.
I have read two of Belbenoit's books. I don't believe he actually escaped from Devil's Island, even though this was a popular title for "Dry Guillotine." He was incarcerated on the Illes Du Salut (Islands of Salvation - Royale, St. Joseph and Devil's Island) but I don't remember him specifically being on Devil's Island or escaping from it.
I agree--Belbenoit was never on the very small Devil's Island. However, I believe that French Guina collectively was often referred to as "Devil's Island". I will try to clarify this in the text. Riordanmr 23:04, 21 January 2007 (UTC)
I am not sure - I have always thought of Devil's Island as simply one of the 3 Illes Du Salut. Maybe in popular culture people think of the French penal settlement as Devil's Island, even though it was only one of three islands, and the penal settlement itself also consisted of towns on the mainland like Cayenne (Caen?). If I was to hazard a guess, I think that Belbenoit's editor suggested the Devil's Island title as it sounds more exciting than "I escaped from the Islands of Salvation. --Bobogoat 15:52, 13 July 2007 (UTC)"
