When I hear a tenor player I wonder, Have they ever heard Red Prysock, the high priest of power rock tenor?1 Listen how he’s phrasing, how his embochure forms the tones, modulates the harmonics, how he ends the notes with that tasty bit of vibrato, how he makes his horn honk and squeak like a first teenaged orgasm. Hear him work the changes? Sure, he packs in jillions of cliches and he uses them, probably in deference to his time just like today. Learn from a surprisingly unknown horn player. THE cut? Hand Clappin'. We used to write Red Prysock-sound-alike charts with the instruction: Bite that reed! What a hot horn player!
