Based near the M4 in Northwest Cardiff, it was the first radio station within the GMG Radio's Real Radio brand. The station was launched in October 2000 with an introduction from Tom Jones, followed by John Myers introducing the song A Star is Born. The format is very similar to the Century Network, which Myers had established in the mid-1990s. Real Radio's evening and overnight news bulletins are produced in Manchester from 105.4 Century FM
