Richard David Hames is a corporate philosopher and futurist who first came to prominence through the creation of a revolutionary approach to strategic planning in large corporations. Strategic Navigation (created in collaboration with Marvin Oka) is designed to enable real-time strategic management and systemic change. A collaborative praxis is generated whereby strategic intelligence, channeled into decision theatre environments, enables the organization's executives to map patterns, trends and ecosystem dynamics in order to generate new strategies and to continuously make corrections to the organization's strategic direction, identity, goals and practices.

Hames is the founder of The Hames Group (a globally distributed futures think tank) and the author of three books, most noticeably The Five Literacies of Global Leadership (published by John Wiley & Sons in April 2007) in which leadership is considered as arising from strong affiliation with a social group as in ubuntu African culture. Five Literacies leadership contrasts with most other contemporary leadership models which are based either on charismatic or contingency theories.
