One note... Verizon is spinning off its wireline services in Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont -- merging them into Fairpoint.com, a company which operates several (smaller) local phone companies. Does this constitute a "new" RBOC? Here is a link regarding this: press release. I also see that Fairpoint Communications has no dedicated Wikipedia article just yet. (Wouldn't it be interesting if the new AT&T eventually bought Fairpoint?) padawer 23:57, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
Yikes, I also apologize for goofily clicking the wrong button. I reverted to an earlier version and then re-reverted back. My intention was not to change it for everyone but, rather, to simply view the earlier map. padawer 23:42, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
- I heard about the Fairpoint thing; I'm not really sure what to do with the map. It quickly turns into a previously discussed issue about RBOCs versus any and all LECs. I wanted a nice, clean map showing the locations of RBOCs. But RBOC areas in reality have huge holes in them, which this Fairpoint sale has only served to make more prominent. As I mentioned earlier, I do have some interest in creating a map that shows all (or at least geographically significant) LECs. The problem is that gathering the data could be extremely cumbersome. I have already found sufficiently detailed maps for Embarq and CenturyTel service areas, but if anyone can come up with more, that would be great. Even a list of names and states that they operate in would be a good start. Thanks.—Lazytiger 01:40, 25 January 2007 (UTC)
I just want to say, this map looks great. Complements to its creator. User:aido2002 22:26, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
Apologies for the reverts, I clicked in the wrong place not realising what it'd do. I'm a dumbass. quack 02:24, 1 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Updates
I will update the original vector map when I get back to the office on Tuesday.—Lazytiger 04:06, 1 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Verizon in California
Some of California is Verizon territory, though this part of Verizon was never a Bell. See GTE California. I see there's a disclaimer on the map, but I'm not sure the area is so small it should be ignored. 129.46.157.114 00:04, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
- The subject of this map is RBOCs, not every known phone carrier. Any additional information, such as Cincinnati Bell, Embarq, or Verizon in California, is not the subject of the map and the disclaimer is sufficient, if not entirely optional.—Lazytiger 14:48, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

- Before someone else points it out, I know that SNET is not an RBOC. I included it on the map anyway because I consider it a special case since it (nearly) covers the entire state of Connecticut. The vector map I am using has polygons for states, so I went ahead and colored it accordingly. A special case could also be made for Cincinnati Bell; however, I have not been able to find a detailed map of its coverage area. I have little interest in showing any other exceptions on this map. Perhaps I'll make a separate map of all known incumbent phone carriers if I can find detailed info.—Lazytiger 16:36, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
- Cincinnati Bell is not too important. I still contend that this map really lacks is GTE, which was much larger than SNET. It's difficult because it's territory does not neatly cover states, but it's a much more significant omission that Cincinnati Bell, which is more like the largest independent ILEC. [edit] Embarq (Sprint divestiture) is also a major non-RBOC LEC
For example:

http://www.embarq.com/wholesale/docs/maps/north_carolina.pdf
This RBOC map has a footnote which belies this fact. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 68.244.97.182 (talk) 23:53, 1 February 2007 (UTC).
- I'm not sure what fact it is you think the map is belying. The purpose of the map is to show in which states each RBOC operates. Embarq, as you correctly point out, is not an RBOC; therefore, its service areas are not shown. The footnote suggests that there are in actuality holes in the RBOC areas served by other LECs. Perhaps it shouldn't say "small, scattered." Is that your concern?—Lazytiger 05:04, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Because this image is a composite of multiple non-free images the current license can not be used and a fair use rationale is required. Dbiel (Talk) 04:05, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Fairpoint
I think Fairpoint should definitely be added here. They bought the former AT&T ("the old" AT&T) wireline in those states, which seems to be the grounds for every other state here. In any case, to list those areas as Verizon ILEC seems totally wrong as they no longer have any Verizon Telecom wirelines. --96.237.58.136 (talk) 21:22, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
