The Rauhes Haus was founded as a home for orphaned children in Hamburg, Germany, by the 25 years old theologian Johann Hinrich Wichern on September 12, 1833. The "Rauhes Haus" was an old farmers house, located on a windy hill (rauh = rough). Today, the house is owned by the foundation "Stiftung Das Rauhe Haus" of the German Diakonie.
