[edit] Scenario that gives birth to an organization
For the entire global Sikh Community, “Punjab Areas” including Pakistan is considered as the home of Sikhism (Sikhi-da-Ghar). We remember “Amritsar Sifty da Ghar”, on other hand, the dimensions of Guru Nanak Prampara (tradition) can be seen throughout the Jambo-Dweep like a Boher Tree. Situational scenario is very important to understand the ground reality. We have to understand the Rashtra,.....the Bharata....., geographically, culturally, politically while keeping in mind the basic philosophy of Guru-Sahiban. Let us study this ground reality.
BANJARA A huge population of the people belonging to the Banjara clan live in the
SAMAJ different area of the country. In this country, there are millions of Banjaras living in the areas - U.P., Panjab, Haryana, M.P.,Chattisgarh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujrat, Andhrapradesh etc. The historic personalities like Bhai Lakhi Shah Banjara and Bhai Makhan Shah Lubana belonged to the Banjara Samaj. Most of these are following the path of Gurudev (Nanak- Nam-Leva).
SIKALKAR Sameway, the Sikalkars or Sikligars are those Sikhs, who has direct
OR connection with the sixth Guru Hargobind ji. They used to make
SIKALIGAR Sarab-Loh-shastra. They also live in different parts of the country, e.g. Madhya Pradesh, U.P., Chattisgarh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra.
SINDHI It is the historic fact that a huge number of Nanak- Nam-Leva Sindhi Samaj
SAMAJ exists in the country.
MAHARAJA Once the Nizam of Hyderabad told Maharaja Ranjit Singh ji that his army
RANJIT SINGH was indisciplined force. He asked the Maharaja to send at least one battalion
& HYDERABAD for his Raj. Maharaja sent the troops and made a Chavani there. Later, these Sikhs were called the Dakhni-Sikhs. At present, these Dakhni-Sikhs follow the path of Guru Nanak Dev ji .
GURU It is a historic fact that in Nanded Sahib, tenth Guru Gobind Singhji were
GOBIND SINGH with Sikalkar or Sikligar Samaj. These Sikalkar Sikhs are still living in the
& SIKLIGAR areas of Nanded”(Maharashtra), around “Dhule” and Indore(M.P.).
SAMAJ
ASSAMEE Ninth Guru Tegh Bahadur ji went to Assam on his journey to propagate the
SIKHS true path of Sikhi. An area called “Dumari” has the population of Assamee Sikhs. Assamee Sikhs belonged to the Oham clan are still living in Barkola near Dibrugarh. Maharaja Ranjit Singh sent a troop to Assam to give them protection from Burmee tribes. These Sikh troopers never went back . After so many generation later, these Sikhs still live in Assam.
ANDOMAN The great freedom fighters faced the horrifying days in the Cellular Jail of
& SIKHS Andoman. After so many generations, the Sikhs lived in Andoman.
BIHARI Bihar is the land of Guru Gobind Singh ji. The Guru’s followers still live in
SIKHS Bihar and are called the Bihari Sikh.
GARHWALI Padam Bhushan and Padam Vibhushan awarded Sardar Kunwar Singh Negi
SIKHS (Garhwali) of Braille-Gurmukhi fame told that in Pauri Garhwal, there are some places associated with the Udasis of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Negi has held a position of S.G.P.C. member.
SATNAMI There are lacs of Satnami Sikhs in Madhya Pradesh and Chattisgarh. Who recite satnam as part of Gurbani.
Also, Sainis and Ramdasis live in different parts of the country.
One thing has to be understood that the great philosophy of Guru Sahibans is not limited to any particular area. It is, in fact, a Universal phenomenon. Guru Gobin Singh ji Maharaj created the two Takhts, namely Takht Shri Patna Sahib (Patna) and Takhat Shri Hazoor Sahib (Nanded), outside Panjab. These above mentioned segment of the Sikh society living in different parts of the country are facing heavy odds in their life :-
(a) Poverty;
(b) Lack of Education;
(c) Lack of Gurbani Abhyas or Practice;
(d) Unawareness of Gurbani Vichar or thought;
(e) No knowledge of Rehat Maryada;
(f) Inequality;
(g) Existed vacuum in the relation with rest of the Sangat;
No institution on earth is doing an iota of work for them. It is only Rashtriya Sikh Sangat considers it as its area of work, Rashtriya Sikh Sangat is constantly working for them.
When Panjab was standing on a volcano during the period of terrorism of both kind-private and state in eighties, some unfortunate happenings detrimental to the cause of Sikh Identity and national unity . Sikh-psyche was influenced by the incidents, namely- Sikh Sangat- Nirankari conflict of 13th April 1978, Damdami Taksal- Jivan Singh Umaraonangal conflict, President rule in Panjab State imposed
By Congress, Akali morch, Operation Bluestar, Operation Thunder, Assassination of Smt. Indira Gandhi .......Then came the massacre of the Sikhs in Delhi, Kanpur, and other parts of India.
One leader of the establishment said- When a big tree falls, earth tremors.
This was very irresponsible and cruel statement.
Our present time President S. Gurcharan Singh Gill, a renowned lawyer, had played an important and historical role for “Jodhpur Detenus” during the turbulent phase of the Panjab. Rashtriya Sikh Sangat’s NRI cell played an important part in bringing back the so called “Black-listed Sikhs” to India. Even harder of the hard elements are accepting this fact.
History Part II
Punjab was passing through a difficult period. ....In 1947, the people of Punjab faced the tragedy of the partition. About one million people were massacred, crores of people became homeless, properties worth billions of rupees were looted, women were raped. ..... Truth was that India was partitioned on the basis of Mazhab with an active role of pseudo-secularists like Congressmen led by Pt. Jwahar Lal Nehru. ....1952 to 1967 was the phase of Punjabi Suba and Punjabi-Hindi language politics, in which vote hungry politician and showed their nakedness. It was a sad commentary on the social fabric of Punjab that some Sanatanis opposed the Punjabi Language, that created a wedge between Sikh and the rest. Some hardliners among the Sikh masses started the hate Hindu campaign in Punjab. .....1952 to 1979, the Congress governments at the centre pulled down the governments of Akalis undemocratically.....1975 to 1977, during the emergency days Mrs. Indira Gandhi violated the human rights and banned all the opposing organisations including RSS. But S.G.P.C. remained intact. The S.G.P.C. operatus worked against the ruling class during emergency. .....1980 to 1984 the congress tried their level best to capture the S.G.P.C. by hook or crook. The Congress party started a campaign to malign the Sikh Community. The ruling class tarnished the image of the Sikhs among the common men and projecting them as “fanatic” or “terrorists”. The atmosphere of the country’s social structure got effected due to this. The behaviour pattern of the common people with the Sikhs outside Punjab was not good. Same thing happened with Hindu brothers inside the Punjab State. The Congress party founded it as very profitable, politically. .....There was lack of dialogue between the Sikhs and the rest of the society. ....“Abe, ....Sardar, ....Barah Baj Gaye Hain....” type of abusive language was common in those days. ....There was tension in the air. The Sikh community founded this happenings very suffocating. .... The terrorists killed so many Hindus and made the fields of Punjab coloured in blood red. ....Of course, the state terrorism existed in those days. ....Talking of Sanjhiwalta was considered as an act of morons. Here, Rashtriya Sikh Sangat started its work. During those difficult periods, when nobody listening to it, Rashtriya Sikh Sangat arranged fifty to sixty meetings in different parts of the country. Those were very difficult periods for Rashtriya Sikh Sangat. But Rashtriya Sikh Sangat propagated the massage of Guru Nanak Dev Ji in the entire nation. For example, an ex-Serviceman Sikh spoke in meeting organised by Rashtriya Sikh Sangat that “There is no use of talking about Sanjhiwalta. We have gone very ahead of these things. We cannot live as a second rate citizen under Hindu domination.” In another meeting, some people obstructed the meeting of Rashtriya Sikh Sangat. .....1987 to 1996 were very difficult period for the organisation. But it proved its potential, while tackling the social problems. What people are seeing the changes in Punjab and other parts of the country, one of the factor behind this is Rashtriya Sikh Sangat. Rashtriya Sikh Sangat is the only organisation that works in the Sikh-Sangat-System as well as Santani-Sangat-System. In that way, Rashtriya Sikh Sangat succeeded in the first phase.
Rashtriya Sikh Sangat’s nationalist ideas are the genuine reasons that make it a relevant force within Sikh-Sangat-System. So, social realism is the hallmark of the Rashtriya Sikh Sangat.
INDIAN NATION IN TERMOIL
During mid eighties, situation was very fluid and was enough to explain the state of mind of different sections of the Indian society. Sikhs remembered the massacre of 1984 in the same sense as the two other Ghalloogharas of 1746&1762 inflicted upon them by Zakaria Khan and Ahmad Shah Abdali. On the other side, a systematic campaign was launched by the ruling class that the SIKHS were anti nationals,........terrorists,..... separatists. The image of the entire sikh-community was painted with black
So, many voices of the reputed persons like Late S.Jagjeet Singh Arora ( hero of Bangladesh war), Air Marshal Arjun Singh, S. Patwant Singh formed SIKH- FORUM to raise the voice against injustices inflicted on the sikh masses.1984 massacre became an issue. But it is historical truth that question of social harmony- SANJHIWALTA remained unresolved. Reason behind this was that the basic fabric and mechanism of the Indian society was totally ignored.
FIRST CONVENTION OF SIKHS AND HINDUS
Some like minded thinkers, social workers wanted to do some serious work in this direction. S.Shamsher Singh ji, a scholar of Gurbani and ancient theology, lead from the front. Ex-Justice R.S.Narula of Panjab- Haryana High Court, Professor Rajinder Singh (Rajju Bhaiya) - the Sarkarwah of Sangh and S.Shamsher Singh had several meetings for very purpose of changing the social scenario and restoration of age old bonds of amity between Sikhs and rest of the Indian society. First convention for the cause of promoting SANJHIWALTA (Social Harmony) between the various sects of Indian Society was held at Deendayal institute, Jhansi Road, New Delhi, in which 160 people were present. More than one hundred Gursikh belonged to various Sikh institutions. This Convention was held on 31 AUGUST 1986 and was presided by Baba Balwant Singh Ji Bhalla (comes from the 15th generation of 3rd Guru Amardass Ji Maharaj). During the discussions following inference were drawn-
1. Vitious atmosphere of hatred doubt about each other must be removed first.
2. The common meetings of Hindus & Sikhs should be organised to promote the dialogue and the cause of social amity, cultural harmony and traditional fraternity.
3. Common Cultural and historical points of both segments of the society will be highlighted.
4. Gurbani of Shri Gurugranth Sahib Ji is the source of SANJHIWALATA for Indian society. It should be propagated in the whole India.
5. Misgivings and misunderstandings must be sorted out and removed through mutual discussions, agreement and trust.
6. We, the descendant of our forefathers, have forgotten the common bonds of our age old cultural heritage. Guru Nanak Dev Sahib Ji & Guru Gobind Singh Ji worked for the betterment of the Indian Society. We are breathing freely in this society, because of the great sacrifice and struggle of Sikh Gurus.
7. Natural bond and relationship of the two segments of the society should be seen in the shape of Khalsa Foundation. Whole Indian Society should accept the importance of Khalsa concept of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj and also they should be made grateful to the sacrifices of Sikh Guru Sahiban and the Sikhs.
8. The Hindu Society should be made acknowledge of the high ideals of Sikhism, Sikh History throughout the country.
9. Guru Granth Shahib Ji contains the Bani of Bhagat Sahibans, who belong to different regions, cast & creed. So, Gurbani has the nationalist idea. Not only that its universal appeal is unique.
10. It was also made clear that religious freedom and independent identity is very important for the Sikhs. At the same time it should not be confused with the common rich heritage of this ancient country. Unity is sense of commonhood. It should lead to mutual respect of each other’s religious, emotional, sentimental point of views.
As result of above views, it was decided that an independent non-political forum should be formed to achieve those goals. Hence a seven member committee was form. The constituted committee had following members-
1. Sr. Shamsher Singh Ji, Lucknow National Convenor
2. Sr. Aridaman Singh, Ludhiana Member
3. Sr. Brijbhushan Singh Bedi, Quadian Member

It promotes social amity, cultural and spiritual harmony. Traditional freternity and mutual understanding between the cross section of the Indian society, especially Sikhs and Hindus, is our area of work. Though they enjoy their independent identity, yet they belong to the same motherland-the Bharat. Common origin and rich heritage bind the both-Sikhs & Hindus. They have common traditional foundation.
