Opened in 1988, Rancho Buena Vista High School, often shortened locally to "RBV" or "Rancho," is a comprehensive, public, secondary school in the Vista Unified School District. The school's mascot is the Longhorn (Texas longhorn). Among the largest schools in San Diego County, with over 3,300 enrolled students, with a diverse student population in grades 9-12, Rancho Buena Vista High is one of the 572 World Schools in the United States (as of January 2008) offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Varda Levy is the school principal. Mari Contraras, JoAnn Jones, Eileen Hermansen, Steve Hargrave are the school assistant principals.

Known for yearly participation in the National History Day competition, an annual United Service Organizations (USO) show, [3][4] and its ArtSplash festival, [5][6][7][8] RBV boasts award-winning programs in theater, graphic design/digital arts, speech and debate, and a 6A class marching band (currently directed by Eric Weirather and Mark Wadleigh)[9] . Many students participate in a large internship progam, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), the Regional Occupational Program (ROP), and IB Certificate and Advanced Placement (AP) classes. Rancho's Cross Country teams are perennially state-ranked, and the varsity Academic Team won the San Diego County Academic League Championship in 2006.[10].

"RBV" is featured in the video game Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (2000), created by San Diego County native Tony Hawk. The school's Longhorn emblem is displayed on the wall of one of the buildings in the school level. Dave Roberts, a major league baseball player, is Rancho Buena Vista's most notable graduate.
