This article cites only one reference, a Journal News article, for a minor detail. Whatever information can't be referenced with reliable sources, and that includes essentially the entire article at this point, should be removed. I don't think the external link to his official website should be considered a reliable source, but if it were, that would probably substantiate a good deal of information. -Agyle 17:22, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

As a longtime Mets fan, I've heard Kiner tell the Branch-Rickey-denying-him-a-raise story any number of times, and every time, to my recollection, Kiner said "last" and not "eighth". It's certainly possible that Kiner originally told it as "eighth" and then adopted "last" when this become the most well-known version of the story, and it's more than possible that my memory is playing tricks on me, but it's also possible that people who are insisting on "eighth" instead of "last" are confusing this quote with Leo Durocher's "Nice guys finish seventh", which is what he actually said, not "last".

Presumably only a small number of people -- Rickey, Kiner and perhaps another team official -- were party to the story, and presumably Rickey wouldn't tell the story about himself, so Kiner is most probably the original source. That means unless someone has a print citation of Kiner telling the story a long ways back, and saying "eighth", perhaps we should stick to "last", which is the version that we currently have the most support for.

Anyway, can anyone provide a citation for this that's old enough to be quasi-authoritative? In the meantime, I'm changing the quote back to its most well-accepted form. Ed Fitzgerald (unfutz) (talk/cont) 04:43, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

If Kiner is the only source for the story, then we're extending "good faith" to him for his own quote. But guess what... it doesn't matter. Whether he literally said "eighth" or "last", either way it's still "last", and it reads better than saying "eighth" and then having to tediously explain that "eighth" equated to "last".
