Dr. A. Rajagopal Kamath is a popular science author and researcher interested in astronomy and cosmology . He has authored several articles and popular science books in Malayalam covering a variety of scientific subjects. Rajagopal has also translated The Epic of Gilgamesh ( world's first epic) and Beowulf ( first epic in English) into Malayalam. He has some scientific findings to his credit. His hypothesis that lunar and solar activity trigger earthquakes has caught attention and he was instrumental in initiating the excavation of the Kadakkarapally boat at Thaikkal, near Cherthala, Kerala. The archaeology department of Kerala initially announced that the Thaikkal boat is 1010 years old. Rajagopal questioned this and brought this to the notice of the international community. Later researchers from University of Southampton and Texas A&M university visited Thaikkal and conducted detaild studies with the state resarchers. Later the Carbon 14 dating conducted in a US laboratory proved that the wood used for building the boat is only 550 + or - 50 years old. This controversy attracted wide media attention.
