Rainbow kick

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In association football, a rainbow kick is a trick in which a player flicks the ball off the floor and over their head in an arc. The arced trajectory of the ball gives this trick its name. The trick is usually performed while dribbling and is done by rolling the ball up the back of one leg with the other foot, before flicking the standing foot upwards to propel the ball over the head. The trick is rarely used in modern professional football, as it has a relatively low success ratio, but players with high confidence may attempt it from time to time. The rainbow kick was recently performed on the world stage, when Turkey's İlhan Mansız flicked the ball over both his head and the head of Brazil's Roberto Carlos at the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

Brazilian legend Pele is perhaps the most known user of the trick and also regarded the most successful at pulling it off. In more recent times, Franck Songo'o of Sheffield Wednesday successfully completed it in a home game against QPR.
