Principle of polarization use for radar. As water dropplets are usually oblate (flattened) as they become larger, the horizontally polarized wave will have a stronger return than the vetical one. Hail on the other hand has no preferred axis.

Comparing the V and H returns will thus give information on the shape of the weather echos and on its type when combined with other data like reflectivity.
