R Whitehead (cricketer)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The enigmatic Mr R Whitehead (details of birth and death unknown) was an English cricketer and match organiser of the late 18th century who played mainly for Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC). He was a useful amateur batsman.

Whitehead made 18 known first-class appearances between 1785 and 1800. It is very surprising that so little is known of him as he was evidently a distinguished early MCC member. However, it was common practice in those days for players and patrons to use pseudonyms and Mr Haygarth does say in Scores & Biographies that Whitehead did use them, including the name "Long".
