Robert Ronald McIan, (1803 - 1856),[1] was a Scottish painter. He is best known for his paintings in The Clans of The Scottish Highlands, published in 1845. In this work McIan provided the illustrations while his friend, James Logan, wrote the text.[2]

In his late teens McIan moved to London to join the Covent Garden Theatre to pursue a career in acting.[1] In London McIan discovered his talent for painting, and in 1835 he first submitted some of his work to the Royal Academy of Painting in London.[1] By the early 1840s he finally gave up acting for painting.[1]
