Aizawl (population 339,812) is the largest city as well as the capital of the state of Mizoram in India. On February 28, 1966, the Government of India bombed Aizawl from the air in an effort to suppress the Mizo National Front's goal of establishing a sovereign land.

Aizawl is just north of the Tropic of Cancer in the north of Mizoram[1]. It is situated on a ridge 1132 meters (3715 feet) above sea level, with the Tlawng River valley to its west and the Tuirial River valley to its east. In the summer the temperature ranges from 20-30 degrees Celsius, and in the winter 11-21 degrees Celsius[2].

Aizawl connects to Silchar by rail and there are daily flights from Aizawl to Kolkata[3].
