Quizzing in the Middle East is a popular hobby for many. Most of the quizzers are from the large expatriate community in the gulf. Quizzes take place at the school, college and even at the corporate level.
[edit] Quizzing in Dubai
Quizzing is most popular at the school level in Dubai. The major competitions can attract up to 30 teams, with the top 8 normally making it to the finals.
The highlight of the quizzing calendar is the Indian Association Quiz organised by the Indian Association. The quiz is divided into four categories-senior boys, senior girls, junior boys and junior girls. Past quizmasters have included Mastermind India champions Dayita Dutta,KE Priyamvada,Archana Garodia Gupta as well as Mukul Sharma (famous for his Mindsport column and a former Dubai resident) and Partha Basu.
The Modern Mindsport, organised by the Dubai Modern High School is another major quizzing competition. The event is normally held along with the Creative Festival and attracts the cream of the quizzing talent from across the emirate. Past quizmasters have included Derek O'Brien and Barry O'Brien.
Other inter-school quizzes include the QuizYT (organised by Young Times),ECMIT Brain Buster,Skyline College's "GENESIS",Al Ahliya Quiz(one of the few televised school quizzes). The Bournvita Quiz Contest used to be a major draw as the winners and runners-up of the show earned the right to represent the UAE at the Bournvita Quiz Contest finals. But with the waning interest in the show, the organisers haven't visited the city in a while.
Dubaiquiz.com is a popular online quizzing portal in the country. Their flagship quiz is the E-Quiz,which attracts over 30,000 contestants in the first stage. The top 150 contestants are selected for the offline finals which has been hosted by Siddhartha Basu and Derek O'Brien in the past. This is the only Lone Wolf (solo) quiz of it's kind in the country.Dubaiquiz also organises an IT Quiz every year for IT professionals. This is usually a huge crowd puller as it is the only quiz in which corporates are allowed to participate.
Informal quizzes also take place at the various pubs in the city. There is very little at stake with the prizes often being a round of drinks or a free meal.
