Variants of Sir Francis Galton's "bean machine", also known as a quincunx or Galton box. These machines illustrate the binomial distribution and normal curve. These figures are from Galton's original publication on the device: Figures 7, 8 and 9 from Francis Galton, "Natural Inheritance", London: Macmillan 1889, Chapter V, p. 63. (Figure 7 illustrates the most common version of his device.) This material is now in the public domain as copyright has expired.
