Grace Churches International is a Christian coalition and council of churches with its headquarters located at Fayetteville, North Carolina. However, even though centralized around North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, Grace Churches International has churches on an international basis and all over the American South.
[edit] History
Only having existed in its present form, and under its present name, since 1996, the current member churches of the GCI were hesitant to structuring themselves in such a manner. This was because of the fear of falling into denominationalism. The intent to unite under one name came from the desire to work together on a global basis--involving itself in international missions and missionary work in over twenty countries including: Romania, Japan, China, Netherlands, among others. GCI's oldest and biggest church is Manna Church located in Fayetteville, North Carolina under the leadership of GCI's current head director Michael Fletcher.
[edit] Mission and Beliefs
Grace Churches International stated mission is:
Our mission is to spread a passion for God and to advance His kingdom by planting churches, developing leaders, and helping churches grow. Every local church within Grace Churches International has a similar goal as the basis of its mission. It is in the process of carrying out our mission that you will discover the true distinctive of Grace Churches International. Our mission expresses itself in five primary purposes that drive all we do.
From its core beliefs, the GCI organization can be considered conservative, in theology, compared to that of others Christian denominations and organizations. However, most of the GCI churches have incorporated a mixture of Reformed theology with a moderated form of Pentecostalism which is stated in its core beliefs as:
- These gifts are clearly listed as such in Ephesians 4:7-12. As these gifted individuals become more seasoned through experience in ministry, their input is of increasing value to the local churches they serve. GCI Official Website
Nevertheless, it must be noted the Grace Churches International does not officially consider itself Pentecostal in doctrine. However, its teachings and forms of worship lean more towards the rather moderate Charismatic Movement.
[edit] Cooperative Work
The cooperative work of the GCI council/organization has led to several major projects, events, and work. Among these are the Grace College of Divinity, headquartered at Fayetteville, North Carolina, the War Cry youth conference--GCI's 7th-12th grade youth conference which normally takes place at some college/church campus-- and RUSH Ministries which focuses on reaching out high school campuses with the message of the Gospel.
