[edit] Rover gas turbine cars
The Rover gas turbine cars were a sequence of experimental motor vehicles, created by the Rover car company to evaluate the suitability of gas turbine powerplants for automotive applications. Rover was involved in the development of gas turbines during the latter stages of World War II and went on to become one of the largest British manufacturers of these engines. Their first automotive prototype — Jet 1, built in 1950 — was the world's first gas turbine-powered road vehicle.[1] In the early 1960s, Rover comissioned the Owen Organisation, owners of the British Racing Motors Formula One motor racing team, to construct a prototype sports racing car around one of their gas turbine units. This vehicle competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1963 and 1965. However, producing a gas turbine unit that was small and economical enough to be practical in a road car proved to be impossible, and at the end of the 1960s the project was abandoned.
